27th World Championships

April 1st. - 5th., 2008                                           Schelle/Belgium

played program: 24 Players, 100-figure-system. Poulesystem of 4 players, then KO.

The tournament hall, before opening

The tournament hall as seen here and his sphere were almost perfect for a billiard tournament - also for billiard artistic. If you want to take a look, visit the pictures section. (Of course nobody can beat Acapulco :-)). Some people from the organisation were good informed "how-to-do" and worked a long time to make this happen. There's good work made from the writers and referees, stewards and stewardesses and those behind the scenes and screens.

There were some problems getting 24 participants. No, there were enough interrested players, but some of the - in first instance inscripted - players renounced their participation. After Alan Campos from Mexico renounced Laszló Tóth or his Federation were asked to make confirmation within 3 days. Hungary did not react, so Yavuz Öney from Turkey was asked and Turkey confirmed. Then Robert Immervoll from Austria renounced his participation, so Madou Touré from France as last reserve got his chance - and he took it. As Organisation - making books, posters, etc. - you'll go crazy with this changes.

The following positive/negative list shall be understood for future organisations to learn:

—A briefing at the evening before the championships is a good idea. The one before this championship was well made, but obviously there were no item for writers and referees so their presence was unnecessarily. After the tournament we know that there were more items necessary.

—To have stewards/stewardesses is a good shot. There is always something to do. Players need water, find the place to make the opposite thing. Also for the sponsors it´s a good feeling to get a company to their places.

—UMB-reglement: worthless, some points were contradicting, some points were impossible. Also this reglement is machine-translated. We hope that somebody will take a closer look.

—The Writers have to be instructed uniformly. Some sheets were perfect, some are almost impossible to decipher and causing faults. This can be a point for briefing before.

—There were lot of situations the player did not know if his figure was counted as successful. The referees have to know that there are players which do not understand the referees language, so referees have to learn using body-language, its not difficult to point with a finger and makes it easier for players, writers, opponent and the audience!

—Also the job to control if the set is already won is already assigned. Guess.... Once two players played one more figure unnecessarily.

—Unfortunately one point more: It was a promise to UMB-referee Ans Ederveen to get 5 days refereeing. On friday Willy Daelman, one of te organisators, told her she will not make referee on the final day because she is not loyal against the organisation taking an other hotel than the recommended one. (Of course not every player slept in this hotel for Euro 124,- each night). With this he overruled the main referee Everaert. So the main referee also was a small employee with no rights. Ederveen, the only UMB-referee who may lead such matches stopped immediately. Here we see that the quality of the referees did not count. The most reactions ciba-online got on this item, also on the following one.

—For the games on saturday Eurosport required english spoken referees.
None remaining:-)
At the last matches a referee makes the work on the table and of course Willy Daelman - also on table - makes the explanation of the figures. There will be no comment here, but everybody who was present in Schelle or on his monitor knows, or you will see in Eurosport if they dare to broadcast.
Interresting, that Willy Daelman asked to became CEB-referee.
Badges aren't important are they???
Such a good tournament, leaving a bad taste with this disgracing behaviour.

—A shuttle bus which transfers the players to their hotel was present. No - at least 3 of them. good work

Below here are following the comments while the tournament:

April 5th,

Its YAMAN with 3:2

17:00 start of the final...

YAMAN      3   59(75)  65(65)   55(75)     50(65)    52(75)
Fonellosa   2    39(65)    48(65)   56 (65)   63(75)   38 (65)

VOS            1  65(75)  33(58)   49 (65)    49(65)
YAMAN      3   46(65)   51(58) 50 (65)  60(65)

14:10 the match began

Fonellosa:Gümüs 3:1

The major and the organisator of Malatya (the last EC in Turkey) are also here. If Gümüs makes a figure, they were enthusiast, if Fonellosa makes a figure they did not make a move. Worst - they are angry about. Some people dont know...this is SPORT not war.

The match began at 10:40

Unfortunately a part of the organisation - Willy Daelman - did not follow his promises. So they decided yesterday that only referees which are sleeping in the hotel may referee the final day. So here is more interrest in money and politics than in sport. After this the best referee (the only one with the highest rank world-referee who may do that) Ans Ederveen stopped after the group matches.
Yesterday evening Eurosport claims an referee who can explain in english :-)
So they had a problem.
Now an european referee begins to place the balls and Willy Daelman himself - he usualy wants to stay in the middle of an happening - explains in english. If you look closer... he always take a look in his book searching for english words.

This must not be this way.

April 5th, Time schedule
10:00 Gümüs vs. Fonellosa
12:00 de Vos vs. Yaman
16:00 final

April 4th, Quarter finals 20:00

After my calculations the half finals are: Gümüs vs. Fonellosa and de Vos vs. Yaman

more photos in the photoarea will be uploaded sunday.

Touré vs Fonellosa    2:3
Bax vs. Gümüs          1:3
Ahrens vs. Yaman     2:3
Jonen vs. Vos            1:3

The classement now:

1. Touré      6 73,428
2. Bax         6 67,705
3. Yaman    4 75,388
4. de Vos    4 75,155
5. Jonen      4 67,418
6. Ahrens     4 66,863
7. Gümüs     4 59,826
8. Fonellosa 4 57,395
This is the ranking according to the tournament director.
It is ranked by matchpoints and percentage.
The place in the poule is not important for this ranking.
So with Bax vs. Gümüs there are playing two poulewinners against each other,
and with Jonen vs. Vos there are playing two poule-second against each other.

At the last Championships the poule-placement counted.

March, 27th - The Main poules

Following the official UMB paper the main poules are:

Poule A Poule B Poule C Poule D
Sander JONEN Serdar GÜMÜS Victor CAMPOS Hajime WATANABE
Willy DAELMAN Xavier FONELLOSA Eric DAELMAN Kevin TRAN
Q #1 Q #2 Q #3 Q #4
Q #8 Q #7 Q #6 Q #5

March, 17th - Players list changes

About Laszlo Toth the UMB had the statement that they asked him to react within 3 days and he didn´t. So Öney will play.
Now there is an actual change: Immervoll will not play, so next reserve Touré is on the list. He will take the 4th place in poule B, there are no other changes in the poules.

March, 11th - the Qualification Poules
Poule A Poule B Poule C Poule D
Ruud de VOS Walter BAX Thomas AHRENS Jürgen GORIS
Norberto GARCIA Facundo PRIETO Yavuz ÖNEY Daniel CAMPOS
Tadashi MACHIDA Kim SUK-YOON Tomotaka TAKAHASHI Hong Seung LEE
Haci Arap YAMAN Madou TOURÈ Jordi OLIVER Jean REVERCHON

You will see that Alan Campos from Mexico is not on the list anymore and Yavuz Öney will play. My question now is why is the 2nd Reserve playing? I hope that the 1st Reserve Laszlo Toth is asked to play!

March, 10th - update
Pics of the players and the referees added

March 10th - players request
Like every time some players asked about the melange of the participants. "Who may play and who not??". It´s very simple, its a Invitation Tournament!

1. After the European Ranking make no sense anymore the ranking is no guarantee to participate. Madou Toure is CEB#1, but there is no place for him.
2. There is also no guarantee for National Champions: Baris Cin beats Thomas Ahrens in the final last German Championships, also Laszlo Toth played a official Championship and became Hungarian Champion. On the other side for example Spain and Austria played no Championships for more than one season.
3. There is also no guarantee for strong players. Madou Touré, Rob Scholtes, Juan Carlos Cuadrado, José Asensio Mena, Michel Parra, Jaime Norberto, Miguel Argemi, Manfred Hekerle, Martin van Rhee, Amando Staes, Baris Cin,.....

So don´t wonder if you will see averages lower than 50%, like every WC/EC.
